Employee motivation

Employee motivation

Employee motivation is a very crucial factor in Human Resource Management in any organization in today's context. This has a direct impact on employee performance and also long term employee retention in an organization.Companies invest millions of money in order to keep its employees motivated in many interesting ways.
Motivation results from the interaction of both conscious and unconscious factors such as the
intensity of desire or need, incentive or reward value of the goal, and expectations of the individual
and of his or her peers.

Most often, employees need motivation to feel good about their work place and job to perform efficiently and effectively. There are various factors affecting motivation depending on the different types of individuals. Some people can be motivated with monitory rewards while other may expect factors such as better working conditions, recognition, freedom to experiment, flexibility of job role and organizational culture etc..

Motivation levels of employees within the workplace have a direct impact on employee productivity.Workers who are motivated and enthusiastic about their jobs tend to carry out their job tasks to the best of their ability and production numbers increase as a result.

Definitions of Motivation

Motivation is concerned with the strength and direction of behavior and the factors that influence people to behave in certain ways.(Armstrong ,2014).As Kalimullah (2010) suggested, a motivated employee has his/her goals aligned with those of the organization and directs his/her efforts in that direction.

According to Arnold et al (1991) , there are three components of motivation,They are as follows,
1. Direction – what a person is trying to do.
2. Effort – how hard a person is trying.
3. Persistence – how long a person keeps on trying

The relationship among motivation, job satisfaction and corporate culture.

Employee motivation is an intrinsic force shaped and maintained by a set of highly individualistic factors that may change from time to time, depending on the particular needs and motives of an employee.
Motivation therefore manifests in job satisfaction (attitudinal) and performance (behavioral) and thus provides the link between employee job satisfaction and employee performance.
