Organisational Culture

What is Organizational Culture?

In order to find answers for the above question lets look at some of the definitions given in the literature briefly.
As stated by Needle (2004) organizational culture  includes the organization’s vision, values, norms, systems, symbols, language, assumptions, beliefs, and habits.
According to Deal & Kennedy (2000). organizational culture is “the way things are done around here”

While the above definitions of culture express how the construct plays out in the workplace, other definitions stress employee behavioral components, and how organizational culture directly influences the behaviors of employees within an organization.

Under this set of definitions, organizational culture is a set of shared assumptions that guide what happens in organizations by defining appropriate behavior for various situations (Ravasi & Schultz, 2006)

Organizational culture forms an integral part of the general operations of any organization.Every organization has its own culture; it refers to the beliefs, principles and values that the organisations employees share. This culture is a decisive factor in the success of any business organization.

Components of Organizational Culture

Values - they define what is good for the organization or what should happen.

Norms - can be described as unwritten rules of behavior.Norms are not expressed in writting they are passed on by word of mouth.

Artefacts - thee are what people in an organization see, hear or feel which contribute to their understanding of the organizational culture.
